The successful Hughes 500/MD 500 series began life as a "V-Tail" 4-Blade helicopter. The improved Hughes 500D became the primary model in 1976, with a more powerful engine, a T-tail, and new five-blade main rotor. The 500D was replaced by the 500E from 1982 with a pointed nose and various interior improvements such as greater head and leg room. The 175 MPH Hughes MD-500 is used extensively by the military, and police forces, in various countries and in various roles. Nearly 5,000 Hughes 500/MD 500's were built. Today's well equipped 500 sells for around $2,000,000.00
