Messerschmitt Bf 109..

One of the most formidable adversaries in WW II was the Messerschmitt Bf 109 (or Me 109). Designed
by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s the 109 was the German Luftwaffe's Primary Day Fighter.
The 109 was flown by the three top scoring fighter aces of World War II. Erich Hartmann, the top
scoring fighter ace of all time with 352 victories, refused to fly any other airplane into combat.
Considered a real "Thoroughbred", the 109 stayed competitive with Allied fighter aircraft throughout the
war downing more aircraft then any other plane in history. Hartmann's Unit alone, which flew the 109
exclusively, was credited with the downing of more then 10,000 Allied aircraft. One of Germany's
famed "Butcher Birds" there is little doubt as to the importance of the 109 in the writing of aviation
history. Although more then 31,000 109's were built, making it one of the most produced planes in
history, less then 10 remain in flying condition today.
